Rated 5 out of 5 by Convos from Don't let its weight fool you! Man is this reel light. I've been an Abu fan since childhood and have owned many of their reels. Prepping for a Canadian fishing trip last year, I decided it was time for an equipment upgrade. I had been using the same old Abu Black Max and Ambassadeur 6500 C3 for nearly two decades. I was hesitant to get the MGX because of the price tag, but was not disappointed. I intended to use the MGX for smaller fish and primarily use a hefty round reel (Ambassadeur Record 5600) for northern, because I didn't think the MGX would handle a big fish very well; but after casting a few times, just could not bring myself to pick up the Record - it felt like a kettle-bell by comparison. And this reel casts a mile, 10-20 yards further than anything I have fished before. The MGX proved more than capable of landing good sized fish. It does have a lighter drag, so it may take an extra minute to pull in a big one, but the smooth drag coupled with the ease of grip compensates nicely. I landed both of these nice northern without any issue. I was so impressed with the quality of this reel, I bought another one to pair with a lighter rod to throw lighter lures. I highly recommend the MGX - it pairs perfectly with a Villain rod. Spend the money, it is well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Amstaffs2000 from Well worth the money! I have just recently switched from spinner reels to bait caster. I have been a huge Abu fan for years now and i own a cheap combo and it works well but i have fought my fair share of nests. I bought the 7.9:1 MGXat Gander Mountain today and i am amazed at how light the reel is and i was like a kid with a new toy at show and tell. Everyone loved the reel. I went to the lake with it and i fished for 5 hours and it never once nested up and i have never casted so far either! I am a bu customer for life. Looking at a Revo wench next. I have it on a Vendetta 7' medium fast currently i will be heading to Bass pro this weekend and buying a Veritas Micro.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DaveL from Awesome reel and the best service! I bought this reel from a national sporting good store and after a month of use found it to be poor in performance. I contacted Abu support and they replaced the reel under warranty in less than 4 days. After two weeks of use with the new reel I have to say this is my favorite and by far best reel. I also own the Revo Premier and Revo STX and the MGX is worth every penny. It casts a mile and is as smooth as silk. The drag system is the best and I rarely suffer any backlashes. I promise you will not be disappointed with this reel as it is only out performed by their service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by rockcrawler from Killer combo with one little known advantage! The Abu Garcia Revo MGX paired with the Abu Garcia Villian rod is the lightest, most sensitive rod and reel combos I've ever experienced. The MGX is very light and low profile, so it fits very well in my hand and does not feel heavy and bulky like other reels. The Villian rod is very light and super sensitive. Now for the little know but huge advantage to this combo. IT FLOATS! That's right, no worries of losing this combo if it falls overboard. I currently own three of these combos and plan on adding more in the future. I highly recommend this combo for anyone who uses jigs or soft plastics for large mouth bass fishing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dogster from Best reel ever! As an avid user of Steez reels, the MGX blew me away! It outperforms Steez in every aspect. It's lighter, smoother, more adjustable, and even looks better! On my last trip, I was able to cast lures from 1/8 to 1 oz. with these reels with ease. The adjustability makes for few backlashes, even in the wind. The lightweight adds to the sensitivity of a quality lightweight rod, increasing feel and ultimately hookups. No sacrifice of power was made for the weight, either. The drag is exceptionally smooth, and has the guts to winch 'em out of cover. The MGX has definitely raised the standard for quality lightweight reels. I ordered 3 more today.

Rated 3 out of 5 by JackD from Good reel but not what it is advertised After doing some research and video watching I bought 2 MGXs about a year ago. The product video advertises the "Carbon Matrix Drag" system as on all Revo reels but that is not the case. The MGX has only 1 carbon drag washer and is not built to leverage big fish out of cover as advertised. I gave the reel a 3 star rating for all day fishability and for casting lighter lures but the reel lags in power. If you fish finese baits in open water it works well but if you fish any structure where big fish lurk this is not the reel for you. I am an Abu fan, I've purchased two Gen 3 Premiers but I have had some issues with their products lately and serious considering switching back to Shimano.

Rated 1 out of 5 by TxsKayaker from Disappointed Once More I received this reel as a Christmas gift from my wife in 2011. It is such a light reel and feels great in my hand. It has great casting distance and backlashes almost never happen. Unfortunately, while casting it, a piece broke off the thumb release bottom. It appears that the durability of the reel does not match its price category. Therefore, I can not, in good conscience, recommend this reel. I've contacted support and I am confident Abu Garcia will repair or replace the reel, but this is the 5th time I've had to return an Abu Garcia reel due to one failure or another.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Jfisherman from Wow I received this real as a gift, first day out with it and the side cover came of mid cast and sank to the bottom in over 12' of water. I would have lost the spool too had it not been for the trail of braid it left as it to went to the bottom. I own nothing but Abu reels and this is the first time I've been disappointed. It seems the one and only screw holding the entire side cover on worked loose and fell off. For a $300.00 plus reel it surprised me that it blew apart in that manner without any warning what so ever. Beware and check that screw non stop!! Once this happens the reel is useless as mine is now.
