Powroznik Dominant on Elite Series
Abu pro closes deal on Toledo Bend tourney
If you haven't heard, Jacob Powroznik is kind of a big deal. After climbing into the hot seat on the second day of competition at Toledo Bend, the Abu Garcia pro was knocked down on the third day. It was at that point most anglers would have crumbled under the pressure, not Powroznik. The Port Haywood, Va., native picked himself up and slugged his way to victory, sealing a 2015 Bassmaster Classic birth and a $100,000 payday.
In his brief history on the B.A.S.S. elite series, the young pro has eight tournaments under his belt and has finished in the money every time he has competed. The young angler displayed his fishing prowess on Toledo Bend this past weekend by winning with a four-day total weight of 79 pounds, 12 ounces.
"I can't believe this year I am having," said Powroznik. "I've had a great year, but to punch my ticket to next years Classic is a really big deal. You don't get many opportunities to win one of these events. It's so hard to do with the quality of competition out here."
Although his stats suggest he is a seasoned veteran, he is actually a rookie on the Elite series tour. Powroznik qualified for the elites by finishing second in the BASS Opens Northern Division point standings. Currently, he is number four in the Angler of the Year standings and leading the Rookie of the Year standings.
Powroznik targeted spawning fish with a combination of Abu Garcia Villain casting rod and Veritas casting rod, each paired with an Abu Garcia Revo MGX 7.1:1 casting reel.
"The Abu Garcia rods are amazing for this type of bite," said Powroznik. "I can feel the slightest pick up and am able to set the hook easier than most rods. That is a big time deal when your sight fishing. Most times spawners are real subtle when grabbing a prey. That was a huge key for my success this week."
The next stop for the Bassmaster Elite Series is May 15-18 in Russellville, Ark., on Lake Dardanelle.
