Rated 5 out of 5 by TxTurkeyHunter from The Abu Garcia ProMax 3 Baitcaster Reel I purchased this reel a week ago and I'm extremely happy with my purchase. The ProMax 3 is one "smooth operator." Casting is a breeze. Retrieval is even smoother. Went out with it mounted to an Abu Garcia 7 foot, Medium/Heavy Vendetta Baitcasting Rod. With 40 lb. Braided Line, I lost not one of the eight Largemouth Bass that I caught today in under two hours. I love this reel so much that I ordered another one. Thanks Abu Garcia!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by MikeG from Amazing! I have fished Abu Garcia for 45 years. As a testimate to their quality, I am just now replacing my 5500C with the Pro Max. This reel is amazing!! Light, smooth, fast and casts a mile if you need it to. My first trip out with the Pro Max I flipped, pitched and casted many different types of lures and it performed flawlessly. Paired with a light weight graphite rod, I fished for five hours and never tired. I gave the quality rating four stars only because the reel is new.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TheIllinoisAngler from OUTSTANDING REEL... Still better reels out there I received one from a friend who had given me a Black Max and he told me, "Here try this if you think the Black Maxs are good!" I absolutely love it! I was throwing a weightless 7" worm (I tied on one for a tournament and forget to put my Bullet Weight on) and I was casting it 30 yards with ease. I put on the 1/8th oz sinker and could cast it across the width of my yard! I have had one backlash and that was because i hit a dock. Super smooth and I absolutely love this reel. However, I have had the privilege of using some $160 reels and they are a tiny itty bitty bit better. I am going to try a Revo or an Orra next and see if i like it any better. Still FIVE STARS

Rated 4 out of 5 by kyrul21 from beginner's luck.. i'm a new caster and choose this bc reel as a starter. i just bought it and it really great in all aspect. first impression, the look is astonishingly beautiful and caught my attention to have one. next, the performance is great, the high ratio gear making it fast retrieval when catching a bite and the controlling the lure action made easier. as a newbie the have a lot to learn. i'm in love with this reel and cant wait to explore it further. thanks abu garcia. two thumbs up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by jloch76 from New to baitcasting I'm new to baitcasting reels. Plus I'm at a disadvantage to most....I crank left handed. That being said, i can't pick up a buddy's rod/reel and try them out to sample. I had to jump in blind and hope I did well. I bought this reel and paired them with shimano rods (M and MH). No complaints at all. I spent the majority of my time fishing (7-8 hours a day for 7 days straight) and not fixing birdnests. Casts well, reels smooth. Swimbaits, crankbaits, spinner baits...it'll handle them all. For a guy just getting started, the price point was nice. I feel I have a top notch rod/reel combo without breaking the bank.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Sword Lord from Great reel great deal I bought my first Pro Max about 8 years ago (the copper colored ones). I put that thing through the grind. Walking creeks and dropping it in the water and sand. Changed it up and put braid on it and used it for frogging and ripping bass out of heavy weeds. With proper maintenance, it's in pretty much as good of shape as it was the day I got it. That fact kept me purchasing them and the new ones seem just as good. Time will tell but after a year of abuse, the new gen is holding up wonderfully. To the guy who gave a bad review because he noticed plastic gears inside.....well no kidding! Even your high end reels have plastic drive gears for the worm gear. There is minimal tension on this part so plastic makes perfect sense. It keeps the reel light. The main drive gears are brass as they should be. Those reading the reviews shouldn't let novice complaints deter you from buying this reel. For the money, it will put you on fish and perform quite nicely.
