Rated 2 out of 5 by from Eh I have three of these realms because I fell in love with them. But after time they become a lesser quality. I had one for a year and yes the drag and the smooth reeling action were still good but the bail snapped on me when I opened it. Like what the heck. I didn't put stress on it or anything. And it wouldn't cast because the bail would keep closing on me. I bought the cardinal sx20 for 50 dollars at the time and now im very mad.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bail arm has habit of breaking I was given an sx40 for my birthday in August last year. By December the bail arm broke right at the screw. Sent it in and got another in January/Februaryish, and it just broke on me again. Yes I've pulled in a 45" bonnethead on this, but it broke while brining in a 12" sail cat. If they just had an aluminum bail arm replacement I would be happy to buy that and replace it. Seems a lot of people have this problem as well. Obviously a manufacturer defect. I'll probably send this back and trade it for an orra or stx or something. Or just get a new sx and sell it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great reel need to upgrade plastic on bail I had this reel for about 1 year but only used it 5 to 10 times and while casting the plastic broke on the bail. I have 2 of these reels and maybe this one was a defect hoping they will send me a replacement part so i can get back to fishing. It happened at the worst time when me, my wife and kids were working on a limit of specks! Life long abu garcia customer hoping they make it right Wayne

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good reel I bought 2 cardinal sx 40 last Jan. Would have given 5 stars but the handle screw has a cap on it that has broken off on both, thru normal use. " just hard plastic" exposing the internal parts to dirt ect. Needs to be a more durable material.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what they used to be Needed an ultralight setup while im traveling for some crappie and small trout. Always been pleased with Abu Garcia products until now. The SX 10 felt like an old time pencil sharpener grinding out of the box. I greased it up a bit, (helped a little), and hit the water. Not terrible, not bad. Headed out again this week and the grinding just got worse and worse over the course of 3 hours. I understand it's a value reel, but I had $10 Shakespeares growing up run smoother after years than this thing has in 3 weeks. The $25 line I put on it makes it not even worth sending back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favorite reel! I bought this reel last summer as a second reel for fishing on the Mississippi River. It is very smooth on both the cast and the reel in. I generally use a 3/4 oz weight with a size 1 baitholder hook. I have found that this reel is more than adequate at reeling in the catfish and drum that average 4-5 lbs. I have even brought in a carp or two that weigh 10-15 lbs. This reel has handled it all and lasted to do it again. I use this reel at least 4 times a week for several hours at a time April through October. I have now made this my main reel, and relegated my previous one to my back up. I am so happy with this reel that I will be using this brand for further upgrades and replacements.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super budget reel! I was a bit leery as the price is quite low, and usually if you want quality you have to pay a bit more. Not in this case. I really enjoy using this reel, compared to what I was using, it is smooth as silk. Caught some nice bass using it and it performed very well. I spooled it with 12 lb Cajun line.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little reel Had the sx40 for trout fishing here in New Zealand for a good few seasons now. Awsome wee reel, smooth drag, very strong (have fallen on it many times over slippery rocks etc) and great bang for buck. I normally go through a reel per season and this sx40 is on its 3rd now.
