Rated 4 out of 5 by BluegillBrandon from SP10 great reel with one annoyance I purchased the Silvermax SP10 back in December for panfishing. I use 4 lb test stren hi-vis gold crappie mono on this reel, and it is the smoothest throwing reel I have ever had. And the retrieve on it is good. Only issue I have with it is that the reel handle likes to come lose and I have to tighten the nut back up after about 15 or so casts with it, other than that, it works great. Got mine for $30+ tax at Wal Mart. It's been a solid performer with bluegill, shellcracker, and small bass. Have caught a couple decent size catfish on it too, and it handled them well. It's a good little budget/entry level/novice spinning reel.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Fishguy605 from Good quality reel. I own several Abu Garcia Cardinal reels and wanted to purchase a few more. I discovered that they are no longer in production and the Silver Max reel was suggested as a similar product. I believe the products are similar, and while the Silver Max is a good reel, it does not live up to the quality of the old Cardinal series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by AZFliegiy from Great entry level reel I'm an abu guy through and through and was looking for a reel for a loner set up and stumbled upon this reel. I took it out today to put it through the paces and needless to say, I was quite impressed and used it more than my revo series reels. The drag is a little on the weak side, but overall the reel didn't miss a beat. My biggest catch of the day was a 3.3 lb smallie caught with the s max open face.

Rated 1 out of 5 by forgottenburrito from Doesn't Hold Up Bought this for an extra rod I had and it worked great for the first few months. After only 3 months of careful use it started to grind when I would reel in a fish. I took it apart and found that the spindle looking part of the handle was partially ground off and there were metal particles floating around inside. My old spinning Quantum Vapor has gone through many more years of abuse (dirt, mud, etc) and is working flawlessly compared to the Abu. Although this isn't a top of the line reel by any means, I don't think it should fail after 3 months. I will never buy an Abu Garcia again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by James Kidd from Reel is smooth as can be Been using abu Garcia spinning reels for 20 + years. And by far this is my favorite spinning reel as far as budget features and durability. I fish year round bass , crappie , trout , white bass and coosa bass 6 ball bearings make it smooth but the bell is tougher than previous reels I've used I did some stripe fishing with some braided line it handled the abuse like a champ more than pleased .

Rated 1 out of 5 by Khairul from Reel Tangles Line I am a big Abu Garcia fan. I now have 4 Abu Garcia spin rods (Conolon, Volatile, Veritas and Vengeance) and 4 Abu Garcia spin reels (Cardinal, Cardinal II, Citrus Max and Silver Max). I used to have 2 more Abu Garcia spin rods and reels. This spin reel (Silver Max 40) however, got on my nerves - Whenever a fish is hooked and the line was slack, the spool would always managed to tangle the line, either around the (outer) spool itself or around the rod's hook keeper. EVERY TIME. No, the other 3 Abu Garcia reels do not have this issue; and yes, I spooled all of them the same way with the same line. Maybe this 1 unit (of mine) is faulty? I think not; because I had a Silver Max 30 and it had the same issue. I had to give that one away for free to a friend who thought he would bear the issue since he got it for free (from me).
