Skeet Reese wins Bassmaster Classic Using the Revo

02.23.2009

Berkely pro Skeet Reese wins the 2009 Bassmaster Classic

BOSSIER CITY, La. – Berkley Pro Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., faced evolving, late-winter weather conditions while fishing the 2009 Bassmaster Classic on the Red River near Shreveport-Bossier City, but managed to land five fish weighing 16 pounds, 12 ounces on the final day of competition, giving him a three-day total of 54 pounds, 13 ounces to capture the sport’s biggest championship on Sunday.

Edging out fellow Berkley Pro and second-place finisher Mike Iaconelli by 11 ounces, Reese brought 15 pounds, 8 ounces to the scale on the first day of competition, nearly five pounds less than the day-one leader, fellow Berkley Pro and former Classic champion, Boyd Duckett. On the second day, Reese rocketed himself into contention with a five-fish limit that weighed 22 pounds, 9 ounces, which put him in second place behind day-two leader Jami Fralick going into the third and final day.

“Winning the Angler of the Year was the crowning achievement in my career,” Reese said. “Since winning that title I have had a new goal and this was it. This is for my family, my friends, my sponsors and my fans.”

Utilizing a Berkley PowerBait Crazy Legs Chigger Craw to target bass in the river’s relatively shallow and very stained water, Reese made every fish count on his way to a $500,000 first-place payout, which puts him even closer to the ultra-exclusive ranks of $2 million professional bass angler winners in less than 11 years on tour.

The 39-year-old Reese adds a world championship and Bassmaster Classic title to a resume that already included an Angler of the Year title in 2007, three BASS tournament wins and 10 Bassmaster Classic appearances.

Reese was not the only Berkley pro that made a run for the title, with 10 Berkley Pros making the Top-25 cut and fishing on the final day of the 39th Bassmaster Classic. In addition to Reese and Iaconelli finishing first and second, Berkley Pros Duckett (12th place), Kenyon Hill (seventh place), Bill Lowen (23rd place), Kevin Wirth (15th place), Greg Pugh (21st place), Bobby Lane (16th place), Casey Ashley (13th place) and Kelly Jordon (10th place) also finished in the Top 25.
