Awesome at first, but after they are forced to perform, they fail.
I've had serious high hopes for this reel, and have given it multiple chances to perform. I started with an Alphamar 20. It performed well for day to day fishing. I started putting it on bigger fish (30-50lb) range. Halibut, Yellow tail, White Sea Bass. After a few months of fishing with it, a squeaking noise developed when line would be peeled, as well as when cranking it in. I sent the reel in and it came back working fine.
I opted for a Alphamar 14 for my lighter set up, same internals just lighters, smaller and less line cap. This reel started to develop the same problem. The squeeking and drag being no longer smooth or consistant has caused me to loose many fish. The drag often locks up even when back off and it takes a good pull to free it up.
Recently, the Alphamar 14 level wind began to grind down on it's self, causing it to sieze up and snap while fighting a Thresher Shark.
These reels are well cared for, they don't go a day without being cleaned completely and are stored with the drags backed off.
Even under warranty, it's becoming expensive to have to keep sending these reels in.
I would stay away from them for salt water applications.

Good
Good reel no problems. I see many others have problems but I have never had a problem with an abu and ill keep buying them unless I ever do have a problem.
