Dramatic Finish For Roy

Abu Garcia pro Bradley Roy was awarded the BASS Elite Series Rookie of the Year award following the conclusion of the Sooner Run tournament on Ft. Gibson Lake. The Lancaster, Ky., angler led the Rookie or the Year standings early in the season, and reclaimed the title at the final event of the season.

Roy bested fellow rookie Cliff Crochet by a mere 61 points to earn the title and completed a year-long goal that he set before the season began.

"When I set my sights on the Rookie of the Year title I didn't expect it to be such a dramatic finish," Roy said. "It was a tight finish for sure. This year has been a whirlwind of emotions for my family and me. I started out great in California, but production slowed throughout the next couple events. However, I never really lost my focus; I simply stayed on course and finished out the season. My sponsors have been incredible. Abu Garcia kept me in the fight from the start, and much of this is due in large part by their faith in me."

Roy, who is the youngest Rookie of the Year recipient, secured the crown on Ft. Gibson Lake with a final weight of 39 pounds.

The young Abu Garcia pro has established himself as a force early in his career. At the age of 13, Roy won the 2004 Bassmaster Junior World champion in the 11-14 age group, and as a seventeen year old he outperformed many other Kentuckians to earn the right to be the sole representative of his state in the 2008 BASS Federation Nation Championship.

"Bradley can look at this year as one for the record books," said Chris Derrick, Abu Garcia Brand Manager. "Abu Garcia has had the pleasure of working with Bradley throughout the year and he's developed not only as a young elite angler, but also as a person. He takes great pride in his craft, which is surely a sign of great things to come for Bradley."

Roy finished in the money an astonishing four times throughout the season amassing over $40,000 in earnings. With a top 10 finish at California's Clear Lake, Roy handled the pressure of being the youngest rookie ever to compete on the Elite Series.

"Bradley had a great rookie season," said Michael Iaconelli, fellow Abu Garcia Pro and BASS Elite Series angler. "He held his own against the best anglers on the planet, and proved to the entire world that there is nothing that can stop you once you put your mind to it. He stayed focused to the end."

The Rookie of the Year annually goes to the BASS Elite Series rookie who has the highest year-end point total in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season.
